Assignment 3: Medical & Molecular Ad
Requirements:
1. The ad should make use of a molecular structure produced through Chimera.
2. The ad should make use of medical image data using OsiriX.
3. There should be a clear correlation and purpose for using both types of data
Note: The ad could be for a specific drug to fight disease, enhance life experience, provide immune defense, etc.
Assignment 2: Sci Vis Presentations
- Why did you choose this piece? What interested you about it?
I chose this piece because it use to be one of my favorite TV shows but I also have a personal connection to martial arts. I trained in Muay Thai and karate for over 2 years. The motion capture and 3D X-Ray process they used to show the inner workings on body to body contact with the shins was interesting because it is different than live action. Also the high speed camera showing deflection was just insane.
- Who is/are the artist/s?
National Geographic are the artists and producers of the television series “Fight Science”. Bas Rutten is the MMA fighter that is being studied to kick the crash test dummy. There are also scientists that study car crashes on hand to record the results.
- What sort of data is being represented? Source?
Scientists are measuring deflection with respect to the ribcage and spine box to see how far Bas Rutten’s kick pushes the rib cage in. Science can also measure the kick’s Viscous Criteria (VC), which measures bodily injury to organs. Car makers use this to study the impact of a car crash on to an average human being. Bas Rutten had an amazing value, 67mm of deflection. This was off the charts and nothing like this has been seen in all car crash tests.

- What makes this a successful visualization?
It shows live action recorded data with Motion Capture 3D visualizations. It also compares the test results to real world examples such as car crashes. The high speed camera allows us to see the deflection occur on the crash test dummy in great detail.
- What things are not working in the visualization?
They don’t show the actual bones calcifying or nerves deaden; being immune to force in the 3D visualization.
-How could the visualization be improved?
They could of taken Bas Rutten’s kick and turned the study into a 3D visualization; by replacing the crash test dummy with a CG body containing a skeleton and organs and showing the force of his kick affect the bones fracturing and VC.
